Can Florida Lawmakers Reduce Distracted Driving?

DistractedDriving3

By now everyone is aware as to just how dangerous distracted driving can be. Even a few seconds of distraction can lead to severe injury or death. Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death among those who suffer from unintentional injuries, accounting for nearly 35,000 deaths annually in the United States alone. Traffic accidents also lead to almost two million injuries annually leaving numerous people with permanent disabilities. Unfortunately, the sad reality is that negligent or distracted driving plays a role in nearly every traffic fatality that occurs. Indeed, this is a harrowing reality and one that should certainly make you think twice before you go to check a text message while you are on the road.

Florida Law

Florida regulation banning texting and driving went into effect in 2013, and this law makes it illegal for a driver to type anything into their wireless device while they are operating a motor vehicle. However, detractors of this regulation point out that this regulation could use some significant strengthening. Currently, it is still legal for Florida drivers to text in traffic jams or at stoplights, and there are no rules limiting “talk-to-text” or talking on the phone while driving.

Distracted Driving Punishments

In Florida, texting while driving is considered a secondary offense. This means that you cannot get pulled over for texting while driving unless you are being pulled over for another violation as well. The following are the common punishments associated with texting while driving violations:

  • 1st Offense: $30.00 fine plus court fees;
  • 2nd Offense: $60.00 fine plus court fees.

Many believe that these lenient punishments are to blame for the large amount of distracted driving accidents that occur in Florida compared to other states with harsher penalties. However, the reality is that distracted driving can be a catastrophic decision. While it may seem benign to look at your phone intermittently while you operate your vehicle, it is important to be aware that at any moment you could end someone’s life and drastically alter the course of your own. Florida lawmakers are aware that the danger distracted driving presents, but it is ultimately up to the drivers in this state to put their phones away and ensure they are completely focused on the road.
